App functions

  • Read the sounding

    See temperature, dewpoint, parcel curves, wind barbs, and important levels on a Skew-T log-P diagram.

  • See which storms are possible

    Compare CAPE, CIN, LCL, LFC, EL, lifted index, DCAPE, PWAT, shear, SRH, storm motion, and composite parameters.

  • Examine the wind at each level

    Use the hodograph and Bunkers storm motion to examine shear and the change in wind direction with height. Then find which storm modes are possible.

  • Open the data that you want

    Download the newest sounding from a station. You can also open Wyoming text, WMO TEMP, and BUFR files for research and to examine previous storms.

A sounding helps you examine the atmosphere before storms start. Use it to examine forecast problems. For example:

  • Can the cap stop storms?
  • How much buoyancy is available?
  • Is there sufficient wind shear for organized convection?
  • At which heights are the important cloud and parcel levels?

Soundings keeps the sounding, the hodograph, the parcel curves, and the derived parameters together on one screen. Thus, you can start with the shape of the sounding and then make a forecast from it. The app compares each parameter with operational thresholds. These thresholds help you read the numbers.

Use station observations to prepare a forecast. Select previous launches to see how the atmosphere changed. To examine previous storms or for research, open your sounding files. The app is the same on iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

Which data does a sounding show?

A sounding shows how temperature, moisture, and wind change with height. These changes help you examine instability, the cap, cloud levels, shear, storm motion, and possible storm modes.

On which devices does Soundings operate?

Soundings is available for iPhone, iPad, and Mac with Apple silicon. For the version at this time, iOS or iPadOS 17 or higher is necessary on iPhone and iPad.

How does the app get station data?

The app shows a list of the upper-air stations that send reports. Select a station to download its newest observed sounding.

Which file formats can the app open?

The app can open Wyoming text, WMO TEMP code, and BUFR sounding files. Use these files to examine previous soundings, research soundings, and other local data.

Which severe-weather parameters does the app show?

The app shows CAPE, CIN, LCL, LFC, EL, lifted index, DCAPE, PWAT, effective shear, storm-relative helicity, and Bunkers storm motion. If the necessary data is available, it also shows some composite parameters.

Is Soundings a subscription?

No. Soundings is a one-time App Store purchase of $1.99.
